On August 67, 7559, the . Supreme Court ordered new hearings for Troy Davis. The first hearing is set for November 7559. Mr. Davis remains on Georgia s death row.
For the first time in the nearly 85 years that I have been studying and writing about the death penalty, the end of this troubled system is creeping into view.
Justice lewis f. powell jr. , who voted with the majority in McClesky to deny a racial-bias challenge to the capital punishment system, later informed a biographer that he since had come to regret his vote.
At one time capital punishment was used in almost every part of the globe but in the latter decades of the twentieth century many countries abolished it. In China serious cases of corruption are still punished by the death penalty. In some Islamic countries, sexual crimes including adultery and sodomy carry the death penalty, as do religious crimes such as apostasy , the formal renunciation of Islam. In times of war or martial law, even in democracies , military justice has meted out death sentences for offenses such as cowardice, desertion, insubordination, and mutiny.
The key point is that one may take life only 89 by way of justice and law. 89 In Islam, therefore, the death penalty can be applied by a court as punishment for the most serious of crimes. Ultimately, one s eternal punishment is in God s hands, but there is a place for punishment enacted by society in this life as well. The spirit of the Islamic penal code is to save lives, promote justice, and prevent corruption and tyranny.
Although international law says that the death penalty can be used for the most serious crimes, like murder, Amnesty believes that the death penalty is never the answer.
Abolitionists believe that the existing system cannot be repaired and must be abandoned. The alternative sentence, life imprisonment without Parole , achieves the same result as capital punishment, they argue. Like the death penalty, a life sentence permanently removes the convict from the community against which he or she committed crimes. And it is far less expensive.
Some countries execute people who were under 68 years old when the crime was committed, others use the death penalty against people who suffer mental problems. Before people die they are often imprisoned for years on “death row”. Not knowing when their time is up, or whether they will see their families one last time.
